Meet Michele Savage!

Over the years, we’ve worked with her to design lots of gorgeous spaces, from bedrooms, guest rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Recently, we connected with her virtually to talk about her style, design process, and her favorite RoomMates Products.

RM: Do you prefer coffee or tea?

MS: I am a huge coffee lover! Like, anyone who knows me knows that coffee is my thing. I don’t mind a cup of tea every now and then, but if I had to choose, hundred percent coffee.

RM: Are you a morning bird or night owl?

MS: I’m definitely a morning bird. I’m not a great sleeper. So I tend to go to bed early and then I’m up very early. But I also find that I’m most productive first thing in the morning. So if you’re ever looking for me, you can find me up and in my chair with my coffee any time after 5:30am most days.

RM: What is your dream vacation?

MS: Well, that would depend on the season. In the winter, definitely somewhere warm and sunny where I can just relax in a chair with a book and do nothing. In the summer, a dream vacation is to be near the water, on a boat, relaxing with my family.

RM: Can you describe your style in three words?

MS: I would describe my home decorating style as warm, cozy, and unique.

RM: How did you first get interested in home decor?

MS: I’ve always been interested in home decor. But back in 2014, we bought a fixer upper. We decided if we were going to get all the work done in the house that we wanted, we were going to have to do it ourselves. So we basically are self-taught. Fixing up that house was the start of something pretty big for us because we kind of jumped off from there and we haven’t looked back since.

RM: Do you have a favorite room that you’ve decorated?

MS: I would say, one of my favorite rooms that I’ve decorated would be the master on suite bathroom that we redecorated last fall for the One Room Challenge. We did a beautiful feature wall actually with RoomMates Decor wallpaper. It was a huge transformation, and one of our proudest DIYs.

RM: What is your favorite RoomMates product?

MS: I have tried multiple patterns of peel and stick wallpaper. I’ve also used the window cling, and I’ve used peel and stick backsplash tiles. I’ve loved them all, but I definitely, definitely love the peel and stick wallpaper the most.

RM: What is your #1 decorating hack?

MS: Okay, definitely peel and stick wallpaper. Peel and stick wallpaper on one wall can totally transform any room. Even if it’s like a room where maybe you don’t love the paint color, you can always pick a pattern to match a paint color and it can totally transform a space. Otherwise, I always tell people, paint. A little bit of paint whether it’s spray paint, a can of paint, leftover paint can totally transform a room by painting a piece of furniture or painting a wall. Otherwise, I just shop my house. It’s amazing how you can move things from one room to another and you can totally transform a room that way. It’s one of my favorite things to do.

RM: What would you tell an aspiring home designer?

MS: I would tell anyone looking to pursue home decorating to just follow your heart. Do what you love. What works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay! I don’t always do what’s on trend. I just see something, or I put a mood board together, or I come up with a vision in my head and I just go for it. At the end of the day, it’s your home, so you should do what you love.
