Applying Wall Decals

Are you new to the world of RoomMates? Have you never applied one of our removable, repositionable, easy-to-use wall decals? No worries! We’ve written this simple guide to help walk you through the application process. As our customers can tell you, after you’ve done it once, you will probably never need a guide again!

How Do I Apply Wall Decals?

  • Step 1

    Step 1

Your RoomMates wall decals will arrive printed on one or more sheets and packaged in a protective plastic shell. Open the packaging and remove the sheets. Spread them out on a flat surface near your desired location of application.

  • Step 2

    Step 2

Peel the first decal from the sheet. It should remove easily from the liner. If handling a large design, consider recruiting a second person to hold the opposite end of your decal so that the two sides do not stick together.

  • Step 3

    Step 3

Bring the decal to the wall. Slowly smooth the design from top to bottom, pressing down firmly. Ensure that the entire decal makes contact with the wall or surface, and that no air bubbles are trapped beneath the sticker.

  • Step 4

    Step 4

Examine the placement of your wall decal. If the applied element needs to be moved, simply peel it away from the wall and re-apply. The decal will remove and re-apply easily regardless of how many times this process is repeated

  • Step 5

    Step 5

Repeat steps 2-4 until you have applied all included wall decals, or (if you are assembling a large design from multiple pieces) completed the application of your giant wall decal.

  • Step 6

    Step 6

If you need to move your decals, simply peel them away from the wall and place them back on their liners (or wax paper). Roll up the sheets and store them somewhere safe until they are needed again.

Easy, right? If you get stuck, don't fret: we're always here to help. Contact us and we'll get you back on track as quickly as possible.

Transfer Wall Decals

Unlike our traditional "peel & stick" wall decals, transfer wall decals (like those in the mia&co line) take a little more preparation and care to apply successfully.

Although transfer wall decals aren't quite as easy to hang, and aren't repositionable like peel & stick decals, a transfer application allows for larger, more intricate designs to be applied to your wall. Transfer wall decals are still removable without damage, too.

If you're ready to try out a transfer wall decal, follow the steps in this simple guide to get your design applied successfully. Although it seems tricky at first, try it once and you'll be a seasoned pro!

How Do I Apply Transfer Wall Decals?

  • Step 1

    Step 1

Prior to application, make sure your wall is clean and dry. Wipe the surface with a dry cloth or slightly damp sponge to ensure that it is free of dust or dirt. If your wall has been recently painted, do NOT apply your wall decals. Wait at least two weeks after painting before applying.

  • Step 2

    Step 2

Unfold the sheets and spread them out on a surface or floor near the desired location for your decal. Decide how you would like your design to look—it doesn't have to match the picture—and locate the appropriate pieces on the sheets.

  • Step 3

    Step 3

Use a pair of scissors to cut apart the sheets so that the separate pieces can be handled individually, following the dotted lines as guides if they are present. This will make it easier for you to put together the finished product. Cut as close to the edges of each piece as you can.

  • Step 4

    Step 4

Slowly remove the white paper backing from your first piece. The decal should stick to the clear film. If it does not, re-apply the film, place the decal on a flat surface, and smooth with a credit card or plastic smoothing tool. Peel the backing away again, pushing the decal to the film as you proceed.

  • Step 5

    Step 5

Carefully apply the first piece to the wall in the desired location. The film should stick easily to the surface. Using a credit card or plastic smoothing tool, firmly rub the decal to the wall. Use short motions and rub from the inside out, adhering the decal to the surface and forcing out air bubbles.

  • Step 6

    Step 6

Slowly remove the clear film from the decal. If the decal begins to peel away with the film, re-apply both to the wall and use your credit card or smoothing tool to rub the decal again. Repeat with the next piece until you have assembled the entire design. Remember: transfer wall decals cannot be repositioned after application, so be careful!

Once you've applied all your pieces, take a step back and admire your handiwork! In the future, if it becomes necessary to remove the wall decal, slowly peel each piece away from the wall and discard.

With patience and care, even the trickiest transfer decals can be applied. If you get stuck, don’t fret: our customer service department is here to help. Contact us and we'll make sure you get your design finished in no time flat.

Wallpaper and XL Murals

Although wallpaper has a reputation for often being difficult, either to hang or remove, a tastefully decorated room, accent wall, panel, or mural can often be the perfect compliment to your home decor. While wallpaper may not be as effortless as our peel & stick wall decals, we think it's time to show you how simple wallpaper application can be. You may be surprised to learn just how easy it is!

To hang wallpaper or XL murals, you will need the following items (all available from your local hardware store or interior decorating supplier):

  • Wallpaper primer
  • Paint roller
  • A water tray (filled with warm water)
  • A sharp knife
  • Seam roller
  • Soft brush
  • Damp sponge
  • A ladder or stepstool
  • (Optional) A pencil
  • (Optional) A ruler or level
  • (Optional) Two or more people

All of the wallpaper and murals sold on our website are prepasted, meaning there is no need to buy wallpaper paste. If you would like to have some paste on hand, however—just in case you need it—we recommend using a clear premixed paste.

Once you have all of your supplies ready, you can begin the hanging process! Here's how to do it, step-by-step:

How Do I Apply Wallpaper and XL Murals?

  • Step 1

    Step 1

24 hours before the application of your wallpaper or mural, applied a premixed, clear wallpaper primer to your wall of choice. This will prepare the wall and ensure that future removal is easy and effortless.

  • Step 2

    Step 2

Once your primer is in place, you're ready to go! If you are applying wallpaper, measure your wall from top to bottom to determine how tall your pieces must be. Cut the individual panels or pieces apart from the roll. Then loosely roll up your first section with the prepasted side facing out.

  • Step 3

    Step 3

Dip the rolled paper into clean, lukewarm water and roll it over a few times. This process is called booking. Don't worry about the water causing any damage: our wallpaper products are all water resistant.

  • Step 4

    Step 4

Remove the rolled panel and allow the excess water to drip away. The panel may uncurl slightly in your hands, which is just fine. Ensure that all of the adhesive is moistened before proceeding.

  • Step 5

    Step 5

Unroll the paper and bring it to the wall. Press it firmly to the surface and smooth with your hands from top to bottom. If you need to move it, slide the section carefully on the wall until it is in place.

  • Step 6

    Step 6

After smoothing the paper with your hands, use a slightly damp sponge or soft brush to flatten it completely to the wall. Work out any air bubbles or pockets by pushing them carefully to the side. If any paste appears on the panel, paper, or wall, just wipe it away with your sponge. Trim any excess paper away with a sharp knife.

  • Step 7

    Step 7

Cut your next panel or piece off of the strip and follow steps 2-6. When you apply the next panel, do not overlap or leave gaps between the seams. Our SureStrip™ technology ensures that panels and seams do not shrink application, so no overlap is needed.

Once you've applied each panel or strip of paper, take a step back and admire your brand new room! See? Wallpaper's not as tricky as you might think.
